Dirty Dusty AC Filter 300x225 1

As a homeowner there is a balance between handling problems that arise around your home by yourself or choosing to hire a professional. In some cases, certain home issues can be easily addressed by yourself, but for others, hiring a professional is simply the path of least resistance. When it comes to air conditioning problems, we get this question a lot. Luckily, with Mason Air Conditioning and Heating, your service visit is always free, so you never have to feel the strain of coming out of pocket for having an expert give you their opinion.

There are a number of troubleshooting tips that may help you solve some of your central AC problems. Below is a list of a few items that you should check when troubleshooting any AC issue:

  • Check your fuses and circuit breakers: Many times, if your AC will not turn on, it is very possible that you blew a fuse or tripped a circuit breaker. Investigate this further and see if the issue is caused by one of these usual suspects.
  • Check your thermostat: If your thermostat is not working or if it is incorrectly calibrated, it may result in mis-messages to the AC unit, directing it not to turn on. In this case, your thermostat may need to be recalibrated or replaced. We recommend locating your thermostat manual and following the troubleshooting steps to see if you are able to properly program your thermostat.
  • Check out your outdoor unit: When you are experiencing air conditioning problems, it is time to take it outside and check your outdoor unit. If you are able to, look at the condenser coil and fan. Since these components are outside, and exposed to outdoor elements, they could be dirty which may be hindering your unit from functioning properly.
  • Check your drainage lines: Your air conditioner is designed to remove moisture through a drain line into a pan which then makes its way into a drain. If the drain is clogged and the pan overflows, the water will back up and damage your system.
  • Check your air filters: Dirty air filters are a recipe for disaster. Not only do they result in less-than-optimal air quality, they also can cause damage to the unit. Replace all old filters with new ones and be sure to make a note on your calendar to change them out monthly.

If you have tried everything or simply do not have the time to address the central AC problems you are having, you will need an AC company to diagnose, repair and/or replace your air conditioner.
