With your HVAC system, there are quite a few things that could go wrong at any given time. That said, having some knowledge of the most common issues will help you to diagnose potential HVAC problems at home and possibly address them yourself. Here are a few troubleshooting tasks to see if your Florida air conditioning & heating system issue is something you can address or if you will need to call in for reinforcements:
Verify that your HVAC system has power and that the circuit breaker isn’t tripped. This is a very common issue that can be easily fixed if the power was simply tripped. If it has been, push the breakers firmly into the “on” position and try running your AC again. Check your air filters to see if they are dirty. If you do not change your air filters out regularly (every 1-3 months depending on your home), this could be part of the problem. Dirty air filters block the flow of air coming in causing your system to strain and work harder. Replace your old air filters with new ones and see if that addresses the problem. Check your thermostat settings. Make sure your thermostat is set to “cool” not “heat” if you are attempting to turn the air on and vice versa if you are running the heat. Examine your outdoor unit. If you see a layer of dirt on the outside of the unit, use a hose on a low, gentle setting to remove the debris. Also, remove any sticks, leaves, etc. that may have gotten stuck in the unit.
