Signs Your AC Needs Repair in Lakeland, FL
With scorching summers, seasonal storms, and high humidity, Lakeland homeowners often face air conditioning issues that require professional attention. If you experience any of the following, your AC may need repairs:
- Inconsistent Cooling – Uneven temperatures throughout your home could be caused by duct leaks, an aging AC unit, or inadequate airflow. Homes with open floor plans or multi-story layouts may need zoning adjustments for improved performance.
- Unusual Noises – If your AC is making rattling, hissing, or grinding noises, this may indicate loose components, motor failure, or refrigerant leaks.
- Excess Indoor Humidity – If your AC is failing to dehumidify properly, your home may feel sticky, damp, or experience mold growth. Older homes near the lakes or areas with high moisture retention are especially vulnerable.
- Frequent Cycling – If your AC frequently turns on and off, it may be struggling with thermostat malfunctions, airflow restrictions, or an overworked compressor.
- Rising Energy Bills – A sudden increase in energy costs may signal that your AC is working harder than it should due to inefficiencies, dirty coils, or low refrigerant levels.
Addressing these issues promptly can prevent further damage, lower your energy bills, and extend the life of your AC system.
Common AC Problems in Lakeland, FL
Lakeland’s historic neighborhoods, suburban developments, and proximity to natural bodies of water contribute to unique air conditioning challenges. Here are some of the most common AC problems we see in the area:
- Clogged Air Filters – High pollen levels from nearby lakes and green spaces lead to rapid filter buildup, reducing system efficiency and indoor air quality.
- Refrigerant Leaks – If your AC is running constantly but not cooling efficiently, low refrigerant levels may be the culprit. Older AC models may require refrigerant upgrades.
- Duct Leaks and Airflow Problems – Many homes in Lakeland feature older ductwork that develops leaks over time, causing uneven cooling and energy waste.
- Drain Line Clogs – Florida’s humidity leads to excess condensation, which can clog drain lines and cause water damage if left untreated.
- Storm and Lightning Damage – Lakeland’s frequent summer storms can cause power surges that damage AC electrical components.
- Frozen Coils – If airflow is restricted due to dirty filters, refrigerant issues, or improper thermostat settings, evaporator coils can freeze, reducing cooling capacity.
Regular AC maintenance and timely repairs help prevent costly breakdowns and keep your system running efficiently year-round.

How often should I schedule AC maintenance in Lakeland?
It is recommended to schedule AC maintenance at least once a year, preferably before the peak summer months. Regular maintenance improves system performance and prevents breakdowns.
Why is my AC running but not cooling my home?
This could be caused by low refrigerant levels, clogged air filters, malfunctioning thermostats, or compressor issues. A professional inspection can pinpoint the issue.
How does Lakeland’s humidity affect my AC system?
Excessive humidity forces your AC to work harder, leading to higher energy bills and increased wear and tear. If your home still feels humid, your AC may need recalibration, repairs, or a dehumidifier.
What should I do if my AC suddenly stops working?
First, check your thermostat settings and circuit breaker. If the system is still not working, contact Mason Air Conditioning for emergency AC repair.

Arrived to find system set at 66 and was 73 in home. Client stated temp only rose after new coil was installed yesterday. Ran system in charge mode for 30 mins to determine system was never charged properly. Leak searched system to find no signs of a leak. Charged system accordingly and tested. SYSYEM now has a 18 degree temp split with and puking water out drain meaning dehumidification is properly occurring. Client is happy and had concerns on daughter’s bedroom not cooking. Advised duct work was highly recommended but mini split would be a cheaper and more efficient route for that room.

Brennan G Today I visited for the system making a loud noise when running in the heating mode. I was able to observe the event that was causing the noise. The system would engage into defrost too frequently and the reversing valve pressure shift was loud. I adjusted the defrost timer, heat droop and compressor time delay on the thermostat. I clarified with Alphonso that the system will make this sound on occasion however should only happen when the temperatures outside are very low or when the system turns off in the heating mode. The equipment is operating normally at this time
